Dojo News: Week of August 31st, 2009
THIS LAST SATURDAY WAS A BIG DAY FOR THE SCHOOL!
COMPETITIONS
Saturday 08-29-09
Four of our students competed in the Colorado Open Grappling Tournament. All but one of them made it to the second round of eliminations. The highlight was Paul Preutt who, down 7-0 points, came back to tie his opponent and then beat him in overtime. Good job everyone!
Saturday 08-29-09
Byron Sowell traveled to Wyoming to fight for the 155lb title. Byron dominated the striking and submissions. There is no fight commission in Wyoming to regulate the event and Byron, in his match, quickly discovered that his opponent was very slippery (probably covered in baby oil or something of that nature). After Johnson slipped out of several holds and submission attempts Byron decided to go back to what he does best and T.K.O.'d Johnson with strikes at around 25 seconds into the third round. Congratulations on bringing the belt home, you are every bit a champion.

NEW SCHDULE
The group class times are changing! This plan should be easier on new students who just joined (with the Basic Classes) and keep the long time students more challenged (with the Advanced Class sections). Classes will be two hours long now as well so that students can get more training with less trips to the school. We are very excited about it! Check out the new schedule under 'calendar' on the AMA website.
CHECK IT OUT
There are three big events happening this weekend. To check them out, go to Dojo News 'week of August 17th'.
STRANGER IN THE NIGHT
Mark Jester is one of our AMA instructors. He is also a former police officer and a 4th degree Kajukenbo Black Belt. A couple of weeks ago he had some trespasser trouble (see the August 10th Dojo News). Well, I guess trouble comes in pairs. Here is Marks latest encounter:
This guy decided to "sleep walk" into our home and into our bedroom last night. Freaked me right out. I almost shot the guy. I smelled alcohol on him and changed tactics to empty hand. I was able to get him under control. With Carol's help, we cuffed him up and drug him down our hall and into the front yard. Six Arvada police cars were there in moments... He was detoxed and cited for unlawful entry, trespass and drunk in public. I was about 3lbs of trigger pull away from shooting this guy. I don't know why I didn't. I would have been justified. But maybe my instincts won out and downgraded the threat. But now this 20yr old will have learned a lesson about his alcohol consumption. It nearly cost him his life.
This is the second occurrence of this type in two weeks. Again, the people next door and their party animal friends were the start of all this. Last time a couple of pinheads jumped into our yard to avoid the police. I tackled one in the front yard and used an arm bar/ wrist lock to hold him until police arrived. They too were detoxed and trespassed.
I thank God for my martial arts training and all the years of law enforcement experiences. Maybe it would have turned out OK, but then again maybe not...
Mark Jester

7-10-2009 FIGHT-TO-WIN: GRAND PRIX round II
Steve Johnson fought for the first time in a Muay Thia match. He did well and went the distance but lost a unanimous decision to his opponent, Brice Hogle. Steve landed stronger blows but his taller opponent scored more on the out side and was able to secure the clinch more easily due to his height. Steve fought with heart and never slowed down (both the Ref. and the announcer came over and told me the same thing at the end of the fight). We are proud of you Steve!
Hope everyone enjoyed our independence day!

ADVANCEMENT
06-25-2009 Matt Windholz achieved the lofty rank of Green Belt. Good work Matt.
WAY TO GO!
Byron Sowell fought Phil Gonzales on Kick Down 67: "Blast". Byron gave up alittle wieght to his bigger opponent, Phil. Phil opened up with a jab right after they touched gloves catching Byron by surprise. That got Byron but he slipped the big cross coming behind it. They tied up and Byron landed good knees and control with a Thai clinch. Byron then got a beautiful sweep and landed with top position. Later, after a failed Americana from side mount, Byron got mount position but Phil quiickly reveresed it and they fought from Byron's guard. The second round went much the same with good clinch control from Byron that ended in a sweep. After a lot of ground positioning Byron got side mount and secured a reverse crusifix which alowed him to rain down punches and elbows. The '10 second s left' warning sounded and Byron exploded with effort to finished Phil via TKO with 1 second on the clock!
